I was going to Dubai Mall on this specific date, one of my favorite places to shop and just walk around, and I wanted to wear something that looks smart, but since it is summer I also need to make sure that my clothes are light so I don’t feel heated.

So I went for this street style look by combining a fitted navy blue shirt that I got from a local shop a long time ago, with my distressed jean shorts from Pull And Bear, and to complete the all blue look, I wore my navy blue Zx Flux from Adidas, and I just love these shoes because they look good while allowing my feet to be really comfortable, and I wore a few of my favorite accessories to finish the look.

And in my opinion this outfit is perfect when you are going somewhere where you need to…

Mother’s Day

Happy Mother's Day

Celebrating Motherhood…

Flowers, cards, phone calls, Mother’s Day is around the corner. Mother’s Day celebrations extend beyond honoring your mother and/ or being a mom. We can thank Anna Jarvis for establishing this holiday that was officially launched in 1914 by President Woodrow Wilson in the U.S.

Jarvis intended this holiday to be one of ‘remembrance’ and one celebrating spiritual motherhood.  Her intent was to honor Mothers, the act of mothering, and spiritual institutions.

She became highly disappointed by the holiday’s evolution into one of commercialism that she came full circle and she became an activist to end Mother’s Day. She was actually arrested for protesting at a Mother’s Day Carnation Sale….

I however think she makes the world pause for a moment to remember amazing women and acts of empathy.  I raise my glass to Anna and thank her for making the world  a better place…

My memories of Mother’s Day shopping began like most young children.  My homemade cards were joyously received and more than my mom could ever want for. When I got a bit older, and would ride bikes around my neighborhood on the North Shore of Long Island I would find the remnants of yard sales or early spring cleaners. Two great gifts came directly from some of the nicest houses in the neighborhood. One was a large gold gilded framed mirror and the other a large wooden frame for a canvas. The mirror just needed a bow and the frame was the inspiration for a still life painting I painted for Mother’s Day. I was over the moon with these finds.  Of course my mom thought these were just amazing. Once I got a bit older, shopping trips with my Dad to New York and going out for lunch made our shopping trips really special.

For me, I have come full circle and while it is my turn to receive those so those treasured hand made cards I must admit I do not turn down the gifts.   But by far, my very favorite mother’s day gift so far is a construction paper painting of my son’s foot print turned into a key chain.

For those of you new to Etsy I have added my line to this exciting great shopping platform where you can find truly unique gifts for special occasions like this.   After searching high and low for a ‘ special and unique gift for a friend’ and coming up empty, I went online. I had never considered Etsy for my own collection (women’s accessories, apparel and home furnishing accessories) because I didn’t realize the extent of the work featured. After discovering this site myself,  I feel honored to be amongst such good company.

If you are going shopping and are wondering what to give…for Mother’s Day…

If you are shopping in my shop and wondering what might be a great mother’s day gift…my first thought is something just for her!  So any of my scarfs from ‘Classic to Glamour Collections’.  They are all about celebrating women and what they love.  The floral scarves are ideal gifts in lieu of flowers, a Martini Scarf to celebrate the occasion or Chics or Essence of Style to celebrate all the women in your life!  Check out some of the patterns below.

I invite you to visit my shop and enjoy the 20% Sale on GAIL TOMA just in time for Mother’s Day.

On a hilltop in Positano, stood a beautiful penthouse apartment with a garden overflowing in Hibiscus and Orange Trees.  We spent two weeks in this ancient apartment carved into a mountain overlooking the village of Positano, and the expansive view of the Amalfi Coast.

The Italians never cease to amaze me with their talents in building into rock, mountain and carving a winding staircase four flights up to this all glass front home.  Off the expansive living room and dining room was a trellised terrace tiled veranda adorned with an outdoor living room and dining room and yes, an all glass outdoor full bathroom with views of the Amalfi Coast.  From this hilltop location I spent hours painting views of the apartment including into windows of the amazing kitchen with a pizza oven, the large garden and of course the Amalfi Coast and living areas.

On this very porch, was where the GAIL TOMA Hibiscus Scarf was created.  It began as numerous sketches, then goauche paintings of individual hibiscus flowers then finally a select flower was set into a digital composition.

For a nice introduction to Positano, a great destination visit…

Yields: 4 servings
Cook time: 3 3/4 hours Prep time: 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 cup KC Masterpiece Original Barbecue Sauce
  • 2 slabs loin back ribs (baby back)

Liquid Seasoning

  • 1 tablespoon dry rub mix
  • ¼ cup apple jelly
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup honey
  • ½ cup apple cider

Dry Rub

  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 4 teaspoons chili powder
  • 4 teaspoons garlic salt
  • ¼ cup dark brown sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon white pepper
  • ½ teaspoon celery salt

Instructions

  1. Remove the membrane from the back of the rib slabs. In a small bowl, combine the dry rub ingredients and mix well. Reserve a tablespoon of the rub for the liquid seasoning mixture. Generously apply the dry rub onto the front and back sides of ribs. Gently pat to ensure that the rub will adhere.
  2. Build a charcoal fire for indirect cooking by situating the coals on only one side of the grill, leaving the other side void. Add a small aluminum pan to the void side of the grill and fill it halfway with water. When the charcoal grill reaches 250˚F, place ribs meat-side up on grill grate and cook over indirect heat for two hours and 15 minutes.
  3. Remove the ribs from the grill. Place each slab meat-side down on its own doubled aluminum foil square. The foil should be large enough to completely wrap each slab. Mix the liquid seasoning in a small bowl. Pour ½-cup of the liquid over each slab. Then, tightly wrap and seal each slab with aluminum foil. Place the wrapped ribs back in cooker for one hour at 250˚F.
  4. Remove the ribs from the charcoal grill, unwrap and discard foil. Brush finishing glaze on both sides of the ribs. Place the ribs back on the grill for 15 minutes, or until sauce caramelizes.
  5. Recipe created by champion pitmaster, Chris Lilly, on behalf of Kingsford® charcoal.

Scarf Style….Add Some To Your Wardrobe All Four Seasons

In the early 19th century scarves became a fashion accessory worn by men and women and by the 20th century wearing scarves became the most essential male and female accessory.  Scarves evolved into advertisements to fashion accessories and became staples for women who dressed.  While GAIL TOMA was the only 13 year old in her class to wear a classic scarf, it was because they set her apart she states, “they gave me a instant stylish look to whatever I had on, even my uniform and I loved that!”  Wearing scarves requires recognizing that you want to be stylish and whatever your look is they do magic for it.  The ultimate timeless addition of style and wardrobe expander, scarves add instant style to every look.  Here are a few vintage looks that scream chic.  Check out the www.NouveauCouture.com ‘s GAIL TOMA Classic Scarf.  The classics are a wonderful year round addition to the girl who loves to look stylish whatever her age is.  Amazon.com is showcasing GAIL TOMA scarves as marvelous prices.  If you have the opportunity to be in the Hamptons and shop at the only luxury department store in the Hamptons, visit Prince of Scots in Watermill.  Discover GAIL TOMA Classic Scarves, Glamour Scarves trimmed with Grosgrain for the stylish preppies out there, with feather and ostrich for the fashionistas out there.  You can also visit princeofscots.com.

A bit from Wickepedia on Scarves…The  history dates back  to the Romans, where they were used to keep ‘clean’ vs. warm.  It was called the sudarium, which translates from Latin to English as “sweat cloth”, and was used to wipe the sweat from the neck and face in hot weather. They were originally worn by men around their neck or tied to their belt. Soon women started using the scarves, which were made of cloth and not made of wool, pashmina, or silk, and ever since the scarf has been fashionable among women.[1] Scarves are also called Kremers, neck wraps, mufflers….

While the snow seems like it isn’t stopping this winter, summer will be here before you know it. Biking is one of the favorite things to do in the Hamptons.  Great for all ages but Check out velojoy for great picks for biking and cyling in the Hamptoons….

Some of our favorite places to bike in the Hamptons includes the villages of Southampton and Bridgehampton South of the Highway.  For us ‘bicyclists’ vs. ‘cyclists’, Southampton Village is one of the best places to ride bikes in these areas are not only beautiful scenario, a peak at the ocean, great home décor inspiration but they boast wider and safer roads!

Growing up summering in the Hamptons, we’d often swap dipping in the Long Island Sound right in front of us for riding bikes from Culloden Point in Montauk to the Montauk Village Ocean beaches.  It was fun and safe as long as you weren’t reckless but now most everywhere in the Hamptons you’d better ride early and watch for everyone racing around most everywhere.

Here in the 1940’s sisters Catherine Murray McManus and Jeanne Murray Vanderbilt most likely could ride to Montauk and back without traffic if so inclined.  These two sisters were considered social scene setters..  This photo was taken across from Gin Lane bordered by Lake Agawam and across the road lies the Southampton Beach Club, founded in 1923.

Do love their cycling outfits!  A GAIL TOMA scarf would be a timeless and ultimate bit of style to the look!  Shop GAIL TOMA Classic Scarves at great bargain prices at Amazon or visit Prince of Scots in Watermill on Montauk Highway or online.
